I Pittori della Domenica, filmed in 1955 by the Taviani brothers, is the first documentary with the soundtrack composed by Umiliani. Its main theme is “Piccola Suite Americana” later re-arranged and re-issued several times by Umiliani and his group, with Ivan Vandor’s saxophone. After his collaborations with RAI TV in Il Mattatore, Moderato Swing, and Fuori l’Orchestra, Umiliani starts once again to compose music for documentaries. Umiliani, at the time very busy with the cinema, likes to compose music for this particular movie and TV genre because it offers him great freedom of expression and experimentation. His first main project is Noi e l’Automobile by director Luciano Emmer, filmed in 1962 and rediscovered in 2004 for the Torino Festival. The main theme of this documentary, entitled “Motori a Ioni”, is in the sonorizations album “Effetti Musicali” (Omicron label), recently also included in the anthology “Musica Elettronica vol. 1” issued by Right Tempo. In the mid 70’s many famous directors like Corrado Sofia, successful in drawing a large audience with his stories of ancient and exotic civilizations, are employed by RAI TV with the objective of filming educational programs dealing with history, geography and economics.
The music composed for these documentaries has rarely been released on record. Whenever Umiliani decides to produce such records he uses his Omicron label, originally established to issue sonorizations, but later employed to release all types of albums. Some examples of this production are the epical “Il Ponte dell’Asia”, “Se Scoppia la Pace”, the rhythmical “Gli Italiani e l’Industria” and finally “Il Mondo dei Romani” where the history of ancient Rome is set to music with synthesizers and electronic drums, rather than with lyres and panpipes.
