Soundtracks
These are years of protest (as Franco and Ciccio remind us in one of their movies). However westerns are the leading genre in Umiliani’s career. The most important ones are two movies by Pasquale Squittieri: “Django Sfida Sartana” (“Django Against Sartana”) again with the song “They Called Him Django” interpreted by John Balfour and “La Vendetta è un Piatto che si Serve Freddo” (“Death Dealer”). “Roy Colt & Winchester Jack” is a separate chapter because this movie is almost a parody and its soundtrack sounds more like London’s pop rather than Texan.
“5 Bambole per la Luna d’Agosto”(“5 Dolls for an August Moon”), a thriller by Mario Bava, can be considered a landmark in Umiliani’s career. Here the lounge dance performed by Edwige Fenech on the notes of “Danza Primitiva” is a special chapter in the history of Italian cinema’s “cult scenes”, while the theme “Ti Risveglierai con Me” in the closing credits is interpreted by Il Balletto di Bronzo, a historical group in Italian progressive rock.
In 1971, there is a Spanish co-production “Due Ragazzi da Marciapiede” (“No Desearas al Vecino del Quinto”) and the soundtrack is recorded on the Maestro’s independent Omicron label. “Latin Lover” is an example of those sophisticated and catchy themes typical of many of Umiliani’s compositions. This main theme song is almost released in the US but, when the movie does not find a distributor, Marks Music cancels this project.
After the profitable “Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso” the sexy-documentary genre is still extremely popular. Mondo Movies leave large space to music and here there are the films “Dove non è Peccato” set in “mysterious” Finland, the “exotic and erotic” “Isole dell’Amore” and “Questo Sporco Mondo Meraviglioso” directed again by Luigi Scattini. In the last one the soundtrack includes the theme “Luna di Miele”, another example of Umiliani’s Scat-Lounge.
