Soundtracks
Comedies, sexy and not, are still very popular in this period. Umiliani’s music, orchestral and lively, underlines Enrico Montesano’s gags in “Aragosta a Colazione” (“Lobster for Breakfast”) and “Odio le Bionde” (“I Hate Blonds”) which gets an excellent review by Janet Maslin in the New York Times (2 August 1981). “Bollenti Spiriti” starring the couple Johnny Dorelli–Gloria Guida is the last soundtrack composed by the Maestro, recorded on one of his labels, the SoundWorkShop.
In 1983, Umiliani interrupts his career as a composer and wants to start a new project. He wants to go back to live music, to the jazz he fell in love with when he was young. He wants to play with a big orchestra on a tour all over Italy, a Big Band on the wake of Duke Ellington or Count Basie. It is a difficult project, however fascinating, dictated by his passion but unfortunately he never accomplishes it.
In February 1984 Piero Umiliani suffers a cerebral stroke. At first his whole life seems over but then music slowly brings him back. Even if soundtracks remain a closed chapter in his career, in the 1990’s Umiliani starts playing in clubs again. In 1991 he goes back to the recording studio for a new album, Umiliani Jazz Family, with Paolo Fresu’s soloist trumpet and the voice of Umiliani’s daughter Alessandra.
