In 1967 the “Eurospy” trend continues, thanks especially to Italian-Spanish-German productions. These productions give the artist great freedom of composition (probably to make up for low compensations). This is one of the reasons for Umiliani’s prolificacy in this film genre. Soundtracks are still rarely released on record. However, “Come Rubare la Corona d’Inghilterra” is a particular case: this film mixes a spy story with the superheroistic style and is released in the US with the title “The Fantastic Argoman”. The record with the track “Argoman Bossa Nova” comes out six years later and today is considered a landmark in lounge jazz.
Another type of movie becomes more and more popular: the Spaghetti Western (however this definition is given only in 1968). Umiliani writes the score for a wild western entitled “Il Tempo degli Avvoltoi” (“Last of the Badmen”) by Fernando Cerchio and also of “Il Figlio di Django” (“Son of Django”) directed by Osvaldo Civirani, in which the epic theme “They Called Him Django” is interpreted by John Balfour. Just for the record, the parodistic western “Ric e Gian alla Conquista del West” must also be added to this list.
In the meantime, Umiliani still writes music for comedies. In this year, “La Notte č Fatta per Rubare” (“The Night is Made for Stealing”) starring Catherine Spaak and directed by Giorgio Capitani, with whom the Maestro has a long term collaboration, is released. The actress sings the theme song by the same title, which has good discographic success.
By the end of this year Umiliani makes a brave decision, that is to produce his jazz and soundtrack records with his own Omicron label, as previously done for his 1964 sonorizations. After having published microgroove records for some documentaries, he starts his own independent production for the big screen. The first one is “La Buona Stagione” a portmanteau movie directed by Renzo Renzi on Italian resistance in the Emilia region, released in limited theatres thanks also to the special mention received at the VII Festival dei Popoli.
For Umiliani this is a first step towards a new season and career, and his autonomy brings him to new music frontiers and international fame.
