Soundtracks
This is a year of cultural, political and sexual revolution that brings changes also in the world of entertainment. The new generation becomes the protagonist in music, cinema and everyday life. Change is everywhere and in this period Umiliani composes for his Omicron label the music for the docufilm “Svezia, Inferno e Paradiso” (“Sweden: Heaven and Hell”) directed by Luigi Scattini. This film marks an era and it is released all over the world. In its soundtrack there is the theme Mah-Nà Mah-Nà that later becomes a universal and immortal hit. This brilliant and catchy tune, that lasts only about one minute ( a separate chapter is devoted to it), makes Gato Barbieri’s presence in “Topless Party” appear less important.
Umiliani uses his label to produce also the soundtrack of “Angeli Bianchi… Angeli Neri” (“White Angel… Black Angel”) filmed in Brazil where the music is directly inspired by Brazilian magic rituals and chants. A few months later there is “La Legge dei Gangsters” (“Gangster’s Law”) that includes, besides jazz themes, the romantic instrumental “Crepuscolo sul Mare” (“Dawn on the Sea”). In 2004 this piece becomes the love theme in the film “Ocean’s Twelve”, underlining the loving looks exchanged between Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta Jones.
In 1969, outside the independent production, there is the soundtrack of “L’Arcangelo” (“The Archangel”) by Giorgio Capitani starring Vittorio Gassman, with a main theme rearranged in different movements. This music is elegant and sophisticated but less innovative than Umiliani’s independent productions.
The movies of this period, to which Umiliani greatly contributes, aim to shock the public by showing everything that could not be shown before, dealing explicitly with sex and mixing reality and fiction with real and fake documentaries.
In Umiliani’s repertoire Franco and Ciccio’s films still remain a landmark along with the Spaghetti Westerns that are now becoming increasingly violent like “Quinto non Ammazzare” (“Quinto: Fighting Proud”) and “Crisantemi per un Branco di Carogne”.
There are also three thrillers: the most famous is “La Morte Bussa Due Volte” (“Death Knocks Twice”) with Adolfo Celi and Anita Ekberg, while “Orgasmo” (“Orgasm”) is an intense and vaguely morbid thriller that –like director Lenzi states in the magazine “Amarcord”- is “ruined by the title”. What about the third movie? It is “Due Occhi per Uccidere” and here the Maestro’s piano is accompanied by Nini Rosso’s trumpet, just like in “A Cavallo della Tigre” seven years earlier.
